"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Several high-profile fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to make music."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed confidence called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
