Diving into a Unusual Steam Demo: Controlling a Turdy Character in a Mission to Arrive at the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is now live, and gamers have found plenty of interesting creations from small studios. But, one catches the eye for its unconventional concept. Named Unko Technica, this retro-inspired jumping adventure lets you play a character that is actually a piece of poop attempting to navigate to a commode. As a fun fact, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

How you interact is simple: just use a jump control. In 150 stages, you'll face mini-bosses and visit a store to acquire outfits for your dung hero.

Execute your actions carefully, since one wrong move requires starting over. Bounce using air pockets to propel yourself to new heights, cross fragile ledges, and activate switches to unlock new areas. Gather coins to purchase challenging levels where things intensifies.

Visually, the demo features eye-catching level designs and catchy soundtrack. The simple visual style with shifting abstract forms could recall fans of beloved games like Earthbound.

While it's tough to think of previous releases where you are a coiled turd, gaming frequently featured scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, you can craft explosives from character excrement. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ feces as fertilizer. And of course, such content appears heavily in the role-playing game The Stick of Truth.

Putting aside its silly concept, Unko Technica has already received notable recognition, like taking top honors at a major publisher's indie contest in 2023. The demo is available now on Steam, with the complete version planned to arrive on computers on November 19.
