Djokovic Issues Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will linger over his career like a "cloud" – and raised doubts about the timing of the sanction last year.

Details of the Suspension

Sinner completed a three-month suspension in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body accepted his explanation that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so major, and when that happens, over time it will fade, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a specific segment of individuals that will always try to bring that forward."

Djokovic's Perspective

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to serve his time without missing a grand slam.

"There is the lack of transparency, the irregularity, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it simply appeared highly unusual," he further commented.

Broader Tennis Community Response

"I really don't like how the situation was managed and you could hear so many other players, both male and female, who had some similar situations coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
