The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.
