The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be on the verge of a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
